Inhoud project:
Chemical oxygen demand (COD) is a crucial parameter in water quality analysis, determining the concentration of organic pollutants in water by measuring the remaining amount of dichromate after digestion. COD determination can be affected by high chloride concentrations reacting with dichromate, leading to an overestimation of the actual COD value. In the standardized method (ISO 15705) these inaccuracies are mitigated by adding mercury sulfate. However, due to the toxic nature of mercury, three mercury-free methods to limit chloride interference were explored in this research project: the “120°C method”, the “microwave method” and the “silver precipitation method” (seperation of the precipitate was done by centrifugation or by syringe filtration).
